Glenbrook Home

A Blue Mountains home in the Flame Zone, with a double-height entry, large deck sliders, clerestory windows and a full-width kitchen window.

Steel-framed sliding doors opening the living area to the deck and bushland

Set against the bushland of the Blue Mountains, this new home in Glenbrook, NSW opens its living spaces to the landscape through generous glazing. The site is rated Bushfire Attack Level – Flame Zone (BAL-FZ), the highest level under AS 3959, Construction of Buildings in Bushfire-Prone Areas, where a building can be exposed to direct flame contact, intense radiant heat and airborne embers.

In BAL-FZ, every window and door is part of the building’s bushfire protection. Nilfire supplied steel-framed Ceasefire BAL-FZ windows and doors, a system rated -/30/-, so the design could keep its large openings without giving up compliance.

The package covers the full range of openings in the home: a double-height entry door with fixed glazing above, large sliding doors to the deck, a run of clerestory windows under the timber-lined ceiling, and a wide kitchen window facing a sandstone retaining wall. Slim black steel frames keep sightlines clean across all of them.

The result is a home that responds to both its setting and its risk: open to the bush, and built for the conditions a Flame Zone site demands.
